How on earth did the Windy City get its name? A lot of contentions have been made regarding Chicago and its famous nickname. Some say it isn't really the sea breezes the city was named after but its politicians who overly promoted the city at one time that they were known to be full of 'hot air'. It also referred to most Chicagoans ability to exaggerate on some issues. However it was coined though, the name seems to have adapted itself to the city weather and Chicago to date has become one of the most relaxed destinations for sports requiring a strong amount of, what else, wind. Sailing is one of the sports Chicagoans take part in. Chicago has all the elements required for sailing. Smooth waters...

The sun is calling, and after a refreshing half hour exploring the lighthouse and saying hello to all the little fishies, your chair...

The strong-back as its name suggests needs to carry the finished weight of the hull and remain fairly rigid during the building of the hull. If it warps or twists, then the hull will take up a shape that could be noticeable and very disappointing to say the least. I build the strong back from 200mm x 50mm rough sawn timber, as a long rectangle about 1M longer than the yacht, and screwed some diagonal bracing underneath it to prevent it moving. I built this frame on top of stumps that I concreted into the ground, but could have been simply bolted to a concrete floor if I had one. Then using the Grainger Yacht design plans I marked out accurately the distances for each station, (mould frame position...

Bodrum is one of the most beautiful places in the world, not least because it is built on the shores of two bays, separated by a land-bank which is home to the Castle of St Peter.   As well as being beautiful with great beaches and a warm climate, Bodrum is also known as one of the most cosmopolitan towns in Turkey. It has literally dozens of dining options, pubs and even nightclubs, not to mention a marina and yacht club.   This all combines to make Bodrum one of the most popular tourism hotspots in Turkey, and to make Bodrum property among the most popular with foreign and local second home buyers and investors.   As a result of a combination of those facts, Bodrum property is among the most...

Mention the words Road Trip in a country the size of Australia and some people will cringe in horror. The long distances between towns can turn travellers off. But it shouldn't, as there are so many places and lots to do and see, I feel the biggest thing travellers do incorrectly when planning a road trip is they don't allow enough time. Being rushed isn't going to add to the enjoyment. If you are on a tight schedule, fly to a central point and drive out to the locations you most want to see. This article is going to focus on Brisbane to Cairns via the coast road (Pacific Hwy). So firstly you will need to decide how long your trip is going to be and that will determine the length of time you will...

Boating the Ohio River

The Ohio River makes a hair-pin turn at Evansville Indiana, on its course from Pittsburgh to Cairo Illinois. It's called Horse Shoe Bend, and it's a bane to barge traffic being pushed by powerful tow boats. That's especially true after a winter of high water through the Ohio River Valley, when the current, plus centrifugal force, carries the river bottom from the middle to the outside of the turn, clogging the ship channel. Enter the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who have to move that sand and silt out of the channel - guaranteeing those tow boats at least nine feet under the keel as they put the rudders hard over to make the turn. All that sand and silt has to go somewhere. So the dredgers dump it...

Dun Laoghaire - a little bit of history... Dun Laoghaire derives its name from the Fort (Dun) of Laoghaire. King Laoghaire was the ancient High King of Ireland before the invasion of the Vikings. It was also named Kingstown by King George IV to honour his visit to the town, and it retained this name through the Victorian Era until just before the declaration of Irish Independence in 1920, when the Town Council voted to rename the town Dún Laoghaire. The harbour at Dun Laoghaire is one of the largest in Ireland, and it's the base of a major car ferry to the UK. The harbour took a period of over 40 years to create, and was officially opened in 1859. A visit to the harbour will see the...

It's a strange thing, sailing shoes should be easy to define shouldn't they. Surely the name describes shoes in which one goes sailing? Well no, it appears it's not quite as simple as that. It seems that the generic description 'sailing shoes' covers a wide range of differing types of footwear and that a surprisingly low percentage of them are ever actually worn on board any type of floating vessel. It's a fact that sailing shoes, since their invention back in the 1930's have in fact always been considered a 'fashion' item, after all just think back to the type of yachtsman who might have worn sailing shoes back in those early days.Back then the only people who owned yachts were the super rich...

Traditionally, a Yacht Club is focused on membership of yacht owners, while a Sailing Club would be membership for smaller boat owners - such as dinghies. Some clubs also include owners of powerboats. A Members Club is a club run by the membership to promote sailboat racing and cruising, as well as providing a meeting place for the sailing community. A Sailing Club is different from a Yacht Club in that the members mostly sail other people's boats, at a much lower cost than owning a boat. Membership is a combination of people who sail as crew, and boat owners. Members decide the objectives to satisfy the...
